Since being on my sabbatical I have become good friends with my friend’s Mum. A few weeks ago she asked if I could make cupcakes for her Mum’s birthday. I asked her what her Mum’s favourite colours were and what she liked to do. Her favourite colours are green and brown and besides crafting, she likes to garden. To my friend and her children she is known as ‘Nanna Chook’. So a theme started to form in my head… gardening, green, brown and a chicken!
Around the same time I was enthralled by some cakes I had seen on Facebook that had colours in the actual cake mixture. The first being Coxie’s Cakes Christmas Tree, which had red baubles inside a green tree!
And the second was a worm eating an apple by http://www.cakesandcookies.co.za/ also on Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/cakesandcookiescupcakewrappers.
So I could play with colours myself, I wanted to make rainbow cupcakes. I did some googling and found out that making rainbow cupcakes was pretty easy. Basically you make your cake mixture and then divide it into equal portions of the number of colours you wish to use.
You then put a bit of each colour of the mixture into each cupcake. I thought the colours were pretty!
You swirl a toothpick or skewer through the cupcakes, but only a little bit because you do not want to mix the colours too much and turn the cupcakes brown!
The morning tea for Nanna Chook was going to be very informal, so I knew they would not mind if I experimented. As I have said I wanted to practice my piping, so I used three different piping nozzles. The pink ones looked like flowers, the brown like wood and the green like grass! I think the nozzle I used for the green will be great for hair.
I added some gardening type fondant decorations and voilà!
Nanna Chook seemed to like her birthday cupcakes
And here is a picture of the inside of the cupcake!
I think we all need a little colour in our day! Colour, like love, is all around. I think the Louis Armstrong song What A Wonderful World best describes the beauty of colour:
I see trees of green…….. red roses too […]
I see skies of blue….. clouds of white […]
The colors of a rainbow…..so pretty ..in the sky […]
Yes I think to myself …….what a wonderful world.
