Halloween Cupcakes

Michelle's Labyrinth Last week one of my cousins messaged me asking if I was able to make her some Halloween cupcakes to take to a Halloween party! Of course I said yes! The past two years I have made cupcakes or a cake around Halloween, and I was a little sad that I wasn’t making anything this year. The week was hectic for me due to numerous deadlines with the tax office, but I made time for these cupcakes and I thought it would be good for me to get away from the computer. Plus I had Halloween cupcake wrappers and sprinkles just waiting for such an occasion.Michelle's Labyrinth

The idea of the cupcakes came from a photo I shared on my Michelle’s Labyrinth Facebook page. The shared photo has disappeared for some reason (Facebook does weird things sometimes), but I did happen to read the blog about the cupcakes. Check it out here if you like: http://www.mycakeschool.com/blog/halloween-cupcake-tutorial/ . This lady made her creatures with melted chocolate and various lollies. I am terrible at piping chocolate, so until I have time for lots of practice I decided to make all the creatures/decorations with my trusty fondant! But you can see I borrowed some ideas from My Cake School Blog.

I told hubbie that I was making my cousinMichelle's Labyrinth  some cupcakes and he then said I want a cupcake! I told him no, because I told my cousin she was going to get a dozen, and I wasn’t going to pinch one for my hubbie. So he then proceeded to tell me how one of the guys in the office brings in baked treats from his wife and he was forced to eat banana bread the other day (my husband hates 2 things – bananas and tomatoes!). So I said okay!! I’ll make some cupcakes, but they may not be decorated as good as my cousins :)Michelle's Labyrinth

I ended up getting up at 4am to make the cupcakes and due to the earliness, I made a boo-boo with the first batch! I wanted to make orange cupcakes with a black swirl. The mixture looked great in the bowl, but as I scooped the mixture into the cupcake tins the mixture became an awful grey! So luckily I was making a second batch – this time I put the black mixture into the cupcake tins separately and gave it a light swirl there. Mental note for next time – mix colours in the cake tin!

Then as I watched The Labyrinth and Pete’s Dragon for the 245th times, I made little creatures and decorations for the cupcakes. Our team at work seemed to really appreciate them. Hubbie was happy that he got a cupcake (or two!). Even two little girls, daughters of one of the ladies in the office, got one

each and I was even sent a photo of them with their big smiles :) And it was lovely to see my cousin, although it was only for a few minutes. So I think I won all round :)

These are the cupcakes for my cousin – which ended up being butter cake.Michelle's Labyrinth

And the cupcakes I took to work – vanilla flavour.  have decided I don’t like vanilla! hehe Fruit cake, butter cake or a non-heavy chocolate cake are much more to my taste! :)Michelle's Labyrinth

I hope you had a lovely Halloween or Hallowmas (All Hallows’ Eve (Hallowe’en), All Saints’ Day (All Hallows’) and All Souls’ Day) or even just a great weekend if you are not into any of them :)Michelle's Labyrinth

More Cakes and Stuff!

Hello! I feel like I haven’t posted to my blog for a while, so although it is 1:29am I really felt like blogging instead of sleeping. I finally feel like I am getting on top of my accounting work and personally have just lodged my sister’s tax return, 98% completed hubbie’s and even started inputting my tax return into eTax! It is always good to feel like you have accomplished something :)  Michelle's Labyrinth

The reason I said “accounting work” is because I listed the tasks I have been performing the other day, just to remind the boss why I hadn’t finished the accounts and they were tasks like HR, payroll, accounts payable, continuous improvement and training, process/policy/guideline setting, and change management… oh and compliance is in my title, but that has been lacking too. As soon as the accounts are finished tomorrow, then compliance goes back up the list :) Isn’t it great owning your own business, you can do what you and when you want it, but you have to do everything!!!

So I thought I would show you the cakes I have made my mother-in-law over the years (since I have those saved to my computer, and I will post my Halloween cupcakes very soon!).

July 2010 – Mouse Cake

Michelle's Labyrinth This is the first fondant cake I made! I cannot remember how I found out about fondant, nor how I worked out how to colour or roll it. But I do know I have learnt a lot since then, both through researching, practicingMichelle's Labyrinth and now going to cake decorating class (I have finally taken photos of my results from cake decorating class on my SLR, but they haven’t made it to my computer yet! Soon!).

I had left over fondant, so I thought I would be able to shape a mouse, and it seemed to work out :) So I was pretty happy with my practice run, and then made my niece and nephew’s cakes the following month in fondant (you may remember seeing my niece’s fairy castle cake http://michelleslabyrinth.com.au/wordpress/my-biggest-fan/ ).

July 2011 – Beehive Cake

This is still one of my favourite cakes! It is based on Debbie Brown’s Beehive Cake. I love these little bees and I still have one of them in my cabinet. What also made this cake special was that hubbie chose the flavour – butter sultana cake. Delicious!!

July 2012 – Bird

Always finding it hard to buy pressies for my parents-in-law that are different from previous years and not wine (as per hubbie’s suggestions!), I was browsing through Myer one day and saw all the lovely Royal Doulton etc china and had a light bulb moment and thought I could buy my mother-in-law one of them. What felt like over an hour later, after checking out David Jones as well and internally debating my preference of a tea-cup (over what I thought my mother-in-law might like), I chose the Wedgwood Cuckoo Pink Teacup & Saucer Set!Michelle's Labyrinth

Then it came to working out what cake to make and how to decorate it, which sometimes is an easy task and others not and I browse through every cake decorating book I have and then also scan the internet. This time I had a light bulb moment (a second one this month!) and thought I would base the cake on her new tea-cup set!

The day I was supposed to make the cake I woke up with one of my bad headaches (too many light bulb moments?) and after taking some medicine I just didn’t have the energy to make a cake. That afternoon hubbie took me to the shops and we bought a light fruit cake and I decorated it that night.Michelle's Labyrinth

I can’t remember how I did those flowers, but I was pretty happy with them! I must have watched something on YouTube to get some idea of how to make flowers. I have since learnt how to make roses, but I have notes and specific cutters to do that!!!

Unfortunately I didn’t get to make a cake for my mother-in-law this year. But my parents-in-law were up for hubbie’s birthday, so they got his first birthday cake made by me! Hubbie was away for work, so we didn’t go down south the visit them. I did make an executive decision and sent her flowers, just so she had something on the day and in case with time zone differences, hubbie missed phoning her on the right day!!! I think he did well and phoned her :) (I am just Michelle's Labyrinth recalling that hubbie was away on my birthday this year and how when I first spoke to him on my birthday he didn’t say anything about it! Oh dear :)  )

Well there were a few gaps in my memory about a couple of those cakes – which is why I am writing my blog! I just know my memory is not as good as it used to be! And I really want a good record of my cakes, my travels and even any special Sci-Fi and Fantasy events that occur. Plus I love to write! The past hour has gone so quickly for me!
